Day 14 - The River Road Trip, Take 2
Today Max is doing better, he is still limping around and whimpers when he moves in certain directions. Vicki's finger is feeling better so Vicki and I agree to go for a drive. We decided to do a whirlwind tour of BBNP and then to Big Bend Ranch National Park on the river road.
The morning was set aside for BBNP. We stopped at the BBNP sign to take our picture:
We stopped off at the BBNP headquarters to get our national park passports and our Big Bend National Park stamp. Then off to Rio Grande Village and the Boquillas Canyon overlook (picture below.) There were little trinkets made of beads laying on a rock that you could purchase. The Rio Grande is shallow enough here that you can walk across to Mexico.
Our next stop was at Chisos Basin, where the window view overlook and window trail are located.
Next we headed off to the river road in Big Bend Ranch State Park. This was the trip we attempted to do yesterday. Of course, Max is wondering where UTT is.
We stopped at a restaurant in Ghost Town Terlingua called High Sierra Bar and Grill. We went into the restaurant to see if we could eat on the patio with Max. They said yes. We sat down and a dog appeared without a leash. Max does not do very well when a dog attempts to come up to him. He will growl at the dog. So Vicki went back in to see if the dog could be tied up. She said there was only one rope and a dog was already tied up. So we left.
The next place we found to eat was in Presidio, Texas a couple of hours later at the end of the river road drive. The view along the drive was really cool. I picked a location for the way back. After lunch we stopped at a couple of stores to get what we needed. We were in the 'big city' so we thought. No Petco/Petsmart. So we have to wait until we get to the 'Bigger City' before wen can stock up on Max's food.
After lunch we drive back. As we approach the location for taking pictures, it starts to look more and more like rain. We stop 4 times, pictures shown:
I get back in the car at the last location and it begins to rain. Actually, it started hailing. Do you see the cloud in the first picture? It followed us all the way back to UTT. You would think that we could out run the storm but it always seemed to be forming right in front of us. We had more hail and heavy rain. We ended up getting to UTT ahead of the storm.
Max does not do storms well, so we decided to stay at UTT. I look outside around an hour before sunset and we were covered by clouds but off in a distance there was a gap. The other day it lead to a cool sunset. I wanted to get some of the same pictures. It starts raining pretty hard. I check about a 1/2 hour before sunset and it is still looking cool. It then starts raining and by the time it finishes raining, I am seeing the last glow of the sunset.
I walk outside but I am too late; however, I look at Lynn's taco stand all lit up and take some long exposure pictures. They come out pretty good.
The rainbow was taken during a break in the rain once we got back to UTT. This is the way to end our first national park.
