Day 63: Lower Falls rainbow
Friday, June 2, 2017
David and I decide to sleep late today. I had read that you should be able to see a rainbow in the lower falls around 9-10am. The plan is to head there this morning. When we get to Norris Junction we see this family of Elk in a meadow.
I don't know if you have ever seen a horse race where the horses trot the whole way. This young elk breaks into a trot. Susan and David are laughing because it can take years to train a horse to do this and the elk evidently does it naturally.
The young elk evidently still has lots of energy and now gallops down the meadow.
We get to Lookout point in time and head on down to Red Rock point. On the way down I notice that all the snow is gone from the trail. Once down at the bottom, I look to the sky to see the cloud situation. It is mostly cloudy. The clouds are moving from the falls toward us and there seems to be openings. And the sun does peak through to the falls. However, I was expecting more sun. It seems the just behind us the clouds are bunching up. We eventually get to see a rainbow. The pictures don't it justice.
We get back to the top, which is Lookout point and look for the Osprey nest. The Osprey is still sitting on the nest.
The next stop is the Brink of the Upper Falls, which puts us at the top of the falls.
Next stop is Artist Point
Next stop is Hayden Valley: We stop at a couple of pull offs to ask the people there what the status is as far as wolves go. They point out the Elk.
I eventually spot what I hope is a wolf. I think it is a coyote.
We are driving to West Yellowstone and see a bunch of cars on the side of the road. There is a bear siting. Luckily there is this nice pull-off area we can use. There is a cinnamon black bear foraging for food. In fact I could not get a picture of it with it's head up.
This was our last day in West Yellowstone. Tomorrow we head up to Gardiner MT.

These are some snow next to the falls. I should be falling into the falls sometime soon.
We drive to the other side and this is supposed to be closed. |
