Day 38: Mesa Arch

Monday May 8, 2017

This morning I decide to try to get a picture of the Mesa Arch in Canyonlands.  The picture to get is with the sun lighting the underneath of the arch.  Sunrise is at 6:45am, so I want to get there at 5:45am.  It takes an hour to get there.  So, I got up around 4pm.

I arrive around 5:40am and there were cars in the parking lot.  I get lost for a few minutes on the trail to the arc.  When I arrive there is a line of photographers at the Arch.  Luckily, I find a pretty good spot.  It is overcast but there are openings on the horizon.  The only  hope is the sun will peak out on the horizon to light up the arch.

After getting set up this is the view I had.

I pull out my phone and open up Starwalk 2, which implies the sun will be coming up on the right.  Then I remember that my phone is usually off to the right.  So it most likely will be closer to the left side.  So I try to figure out the composition.

I decided on this view. It now time to hope the sun sneaks through enough to light up the underneath the arch.

No lighting of the underneath
Kind of looks like a monster

I notice the clouds are doing something interesting.

I drove around to look at some other places in Canyonlands.

I come home eat and take a nap.  We are getting ready to go eat at the Sunset Grill which is at the top of a mountain in Moab. I notice the mountains are looking cool.

Vicki and I decide to go to the Sunset Grill, which has a patio and thus allows dogs.   We go there around 5pm, get a seat on the deck.  The restaurant is on a cliff with a great view of Moab.  To add to the scenery it is starting to rain over Moab.

This is a really nice restaurant and the waiter takes his time, which is to be expected.  We have an appetizer and salad.  Then the rain starts.  Now having a dog we are not allowed to move inside.  The rain is blowing around so we could not find a spot that was not getting rain.  So we finally let the waiter know we were leaving just as our main meal was arriving.  The waiter boxed up the dinner and threw in a couple of free desserts.
