Day 29: Vicki's B-day and Sunrise pictures at Mather Point
Matt, Zach and I decide to leave for Mather Point at 4:45am today. I get up at 4:15am get all my equipment in the car and text my sister at 4:50am asking if they are up. I get a "Dang No" followed by a "No". Some how the volume level was not on on her phone alarm. Also, Matt had decided not to go. Zach and I get off around 5:15am. It is cold, around freezing, but at least not windy. Zach had not quite come prepared for cold weather. He had no gloves so I gave him a pair of mine. I make a couple of wrong turns and end up finally getting to Mather Point around 5:30am. Having never been there we end up at the wrong spot. We get set up at sunrise and work our way down to the actual Mather Point.
As we are leaving, a heard of elk are feeding along the path.
The sky is crystal clear. It would have been a great morning to take star pictures.
Zach wanted to hike the Bright Angel Trail, so Sean, Zach and I walked about 1 mile down to the second tunnel. The map we looked at said it would take us 1-2 hours. It took us approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. I think we could have easily done 2 miles.
Zach wanted everyone to go to Desert View. I took a couple of pictures and then helped T-Man (Thomas) as he took pictures. I was very happy for him to be able too get out and enjoy photography again.
Marybeth wanted to stop at a couple of points on the way back. We stopped at Lapin Point:
and Grandview Point:
